The Fall of Cro Cop
In a stunning turn of events Saturday night, Mirko Cro Cop, the pretty much unrivaled heavyweight MMA fighter, was knocked out by the relatively unknown Gabreil Gonzaga. This was not a fluke slippage knockout either. Gonzaga cranked Cro Cop in the head with a brutal leg kick which knocked him out so quickly that Mirko fell onto his own left leg where it looks like he may have dislocated his ankle and torn a knee ligament or two. With this win Gonzaga wins the right to battle Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight title in August. It should be an interesting bout since Gonzaga is pretty new and Couture is pretty old, as in 43 years old. You gotta love it when an unknown fighter comes out and slays one of the giants of the sport, but that is the essence of MMA, that anything can happen at any moment (except for eye gouging, biting, etcc, but you get the point).

Quick Flash 04/19/2007 - Annie Pelletier

- Cavs clinch second seed in East with win and Bulls loss. Lebron's season of coasting has paid off!
- Apparently smoking weed is no longer a negative in the NFL. It's good for keeping players calm enough to not attack their girlfriends until the pregnancies are over.
- Bonds inches closer. Snipers start to get ready.
- Chick famous for her fake boobs seems to think women can actually coach men. If she had ever seen a Celtics or Clippers game she would know that men can't even coach men.
- Rangers advance in NHL playoffs. Anyone catch that on VS?
- Mayweather talking himself into a UFC mega-fight? We can only hope.
- King Felix hurts arm in 1st. Millions of seasons hang in the balance, not to mention their extreme keeper brethren.

Cinderella Lives!

In a month of April that saw two #1 and two #2 seeds make the Final Four, much of America wondered whether Cinderella was dead. She is not dead. She merely relocated to the world of the UFC where severe underdog Matt Serra dethroned untouchable champion Georges St. Pierre in their title bout. Serra was only granted the title shot as a result of a victory on the UFC reality show The Ultimate Fighter. Serra made the most of his shot with his incredible and stunning victory that left the entire MMA world in shock, especially those in the 170 lbs division. There, surely every quasi-contender is clamoring for a title shot at the heretofore regarded as average Matt Serra. Though he may not remain champ for long, today he is king. Tonight he sleeps the sleep of the just.

UFC buys out the competition.

The UFC announced the purchase of its main rival, Pride FC, which is based out of Japan. The move will bring most of the world's top MMA fighters together under one company although the two leagues will continue to be run as separate entities but will utilize the same rules. The merger makes possible future super fights between champions like Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell, who had such a bout cancelled in November because of disagreements between the two organizations. Pride fell onto hard times financially when they lost their lucrative TV contract after allegations surfaced regarding possible ties to organized crime. The UFC purchase should allow for a renewed TV contract as well as providing current UFC fighters an ability to increase their international profile by fighting in front of the 80k+ crowds that regularly fill Japanese arenas to watch MMA, compared to the 30k that usually watch in the United States. My personal hope is that Pride also switches to the octagon style cage employed by the UFC in lieu of their current boxing ring type setup. The cage limits the number of restarts which occur quite frequently when fighters get tangled up in the ropes.

Quick Flash 03/08/2007 - Morgan Beck

- What can be better to have at your Super Sweet 16 than a Super Bowl MVP?
- Kent State to play two football games on the road in one day. Toughness, foolishness, and incompetence all wrapped into one day.
- Introducing the Barry Bonds Butt Plug, #1 butt plug choice of pitchers and catchers all over San Fransisco.
- Hilarious clip of UFC Champ Chuck Liddell falling asleep on a Dallas morning show.
- Iditarod not so grueling, filled with steak, lobster, and elegance.

Joe Rogan wants to fight Carlos Mencia

In a world where Maria Sharapova is a UN ambassador, Joe Rogan is apparently much more than a talking head for the UFC. He is a comedian, which is humorous in itself because I've never heard him spout anything remotely funny. Anyway he is in a war with an even unfunnier comedian, good old Carlos Mencia, and it got him banned from the Comedy Store. I would like to see them compete to the death in a three pronged competition involving a UFC fight, a Fear Factor eating donkey poop and deer genitals contest, and a stand-up war. This competition would be funnier and more entertaining than either of them in their entire careers with the added bonus that one of them would no longer be alive afterward.
